Introduction to Gastrostomy Tubes
A general overview of G-tube types, routine care principles, and safety red flags.
Program Description
Learn how to care for your child's Gastrostomy tube. An introduction to Gastrostomy Tube Care & Safety is a general education session designed to provide an overview of gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) and common care concepts. This class covers basic tube types and components, routine site-care principles, infection-prevention basics, general safety considerations, and common issues caregivers may encounter (e.g., leakage, irritation, suspected blockage, vomiting during feeds) with guidance on when to contact the child’s medical team or seek urgent/emergency care. This session is not patient-specific: no protected health information (PHI) is collected or reviewed, and no individualized feeding schedules, medication instructions, pump settings, or provider orders are taught. The training does not include clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, or custody recommendations. Participants are instructed to follow the child’s current prescribed plan and to direct patient-specific questions to the child’s treating providers. Format: 2-hour classroom-style overview with Q&A (general concepts only).
